Android vs iPhone: Which Lasts Longer in 2026?

Apple's long reign on updates finally has real competition. Here's how the support windows actually compare now — with the data.

For more than a decade, the answer to “which phone lasts longer?” was simple: the iPhone. Apple updated its phones for years after rivals had moved on, and that longevity was a genuine reason to pay the Apple tax. In 2026 that story has changed — not because Apple got worse, but because the best of Android finally caught up. Here's the honest, data-backed comparison.

Why the iPhone earned its reputation

Apple has never published an end-of-support date — but its track record speaks for itself. The iPhone 6s and iPhone XS each received well over seven years of updates. Apple's only written commitment (a UK regulatory filing) is a minimum of five years, but in practice iPhones land closer to seven. Crucially, Apple controls both the chip and the software, so that long window applies to everyiPhone it sells, cheap or expensive. There's no “budget iPhone” that gets cut off early. That consistency was Apple's real advantage — and it's the part Android still hasn't fully matched.

Samsung and Google closed the gap

The headline of the last few years: the two biggest Android names now match Apple outright.

  • Samsung gives its Galaxy S24 generation onward seven yearsof OS and security updates — and extends six years even to surprisingly cheap A-series models. That's the joint-best promise in the industry. See Samsung's policy.

So at the top of the Android market, longevity is no longer a reason to prefer an iPhone. A Galaxy S25, a Pixel 10, and a new iPhone will all be getting security patches into the early 2030s.

The rest of Android is where it gets messy

Here's the catch, and it's a big one: outside Samsung and Google, Android support drops off sharply and varies wildly by brand and even by model.

  • OnePlus gives current flagships four OS upgrades and six years of security — strong, but older models had far shorter windows. (OnePlus policy)
  • Xiaomi ranges from four upgrades and five years on its flagships down to two or three on cheaper Redmi and POCO models. (Xiaomi policy)

This is the real difference between the platforms in 2026. With Apple, longevity is uniform. With Android, it spans from best-in-class to barely two years— sometimes within the same brand's lineup. Android gives you more long-support choices than ever, but also far more short-support traps.

The honest verdict

If you buy at the top — a current iPhone, Galaxy S, or Pixel — they last about the same, roughly seven years of safety. The OS you prefer should decide it, not longevity.

If you buy below the flagship tier, the question stops being “Android or iPhone?” and becomes “which specific phone?” A cheaper iPhone still inherits Apple's long window. A cheaper Android might match it (Samsung A-series, Pixel A-series) or might give you a third of it (a no-name budget model). On Android, you have to check every time.

So the platform isn't the answer — the individual phone is. The part nobody mentions: how long the phone stays usable

Support length is the headline comparison, but it is not the whole story. A phone can be receiving patches and still be unpleasant to use, and the two platforms fail differently here.

Apple ships new iOS versions to old hardware for a long time, which is generous but has a cost: an iPhone in year six of support is running an OS designed for hardware three generations newer, and it will feel it. Android manufacturers tend to stop OS upgrades earlier and continue security patches afterwards, which means the last years are on an older, lighter OS version that the hardware handles more comfortably.

Neither approach is obviously better. Apple's gives you features for longer; Android's gives you a phone that stays responsive for longer. What matters is knowing which you are signing up for.

Where Android is genuinely ahead now

The reflexive assumption that iPhones last longer is increasingly out of date, and in two specific ways Android has overtaken.

Written commitments.Samsung and Google publish exact figures — seven years of OS and security updates, from a stated launch date. Apple publishes nothing. Its documented track record is around seven years, and its written legal minimum under UK PSTI regulations is five. Seven is what usually happens; five is what is actually promised.

Budget coverage.Samsung offers six years of security patches on phones costing $130. Apple's cheapest current iPhone is many times that. If the question is “what is the longest-supported phone I can buy for $200?”, the answer is Android and it is not close.

How to choose on this basis

If you buy flagship phones and keep them until they die, the two platforms are now effectively tied at seven years, and the decision should be made on everything else — ecosystem, camera preference, repair options, price.

If you buy in the mid-range or below, Android wins on longevity by a wide margin, because Apple does not compete at those prices. And if you are buying used, check the specific model's remaining window rather than reasoning from the brand: a 2021 Android phone is likely already out of support, while a 2021 iPhone probably has two or three years left. The budget half of Android is a different question entirely

Comparing “Android” to iPhone on updates is misleading, because Android is not one thing. At the top, Samsung and Google now match or beat Apple. At the bottom, a large slice of the Android market ships with two or three years of patches and no written commitment at all — and that slice is where most Android phones are actually sold worldwide.

Tecno, Infinixand much of the sub-$200 market publish no update policy whatsoever. Their phones often carry genuinely impressive hardware for the money — curved AMOLED panels, wireless charging, high refresh rates — funded in part by spending nothing on long-term software maintenance. If your comparison is “iPhone versus a $180 Android”, the update gap is not closed at all; it is roughly four years wide.

This is why the brand-level comparison matters less than it appears. A Pixel 9a and an Infinix Note 50s are both Android phones, and one is supported for about seven years while the other is estimated at three. What the EU rules changed for both platforms

In June 2025 the EU's ecodesign regulations took effect, requiring phones sold in the bloc to receive security updates for at least five years after the model stops being sold, alongside spare-part availability requirements. This mattered more for Android than for iPhone, because Apple was already well past that bar and much of Android was not.

The practical effect has been a wave of brands advertising five- and six-year windows that previously offered two or three. That is a real improvement for buyers, but it is worth reading with some care: a five-year commitment from a manufacturer that has never delivered one before is compliance rather than a track record. The delivery evidence does not exist yet, and a promise is only worth what the patch history supports. Apple, for all that it publishes no policy years at all, has a documented history of roughly seven years, which is a different kind of assurance.

Battery and repairability: the other half of longevity

Software support sets the outer limit on a phone's life, but batteries usually fail first. Most lithium-ion phone batteries fall to around 80% of their original capacity after 500 to 800 full charge cycles, which for typical use arrives somewhere between years two and four — comfortably inside a seven-year support window on either platform.

Here Apple has a structural advantage that is easy to overlook: an established repair network, long parts availability, and a battery replacement service that remains available for years after a model is discontinued. Android is more variable. Samsung and Google both now offer official repair programmes and multi-year parts commitments, but a budget Android from a brand with no local service presence can be effectively unrepairable, which caps its real lifespan well below its software window. If you intend to keep a phone for seven years, ask who will replace the battery in year three — the answer is part of the longevity question, not separate from it.

What each platform does when support finally ends

The two platforms fail differently, and it is worth knowing which failure you are signing up for. When an iPhone drops off the update list, Apple typically continues to issue occasional emergency security fixes for older iOS versions when a flaw is being actively exploited — it has done this several times for devices years past their last feature update. That is not a commitment and should not be relied on, but it is a meaningful backstop that Android largely lacks.

Android's advantage runs the other way. Because Google delivers a slice of the system through Play System updates, and because the app ecosystem supports older API levels for a long time, an out-of-support Android phone often keeps receiving working app updates well after its patches stop. And for popular models there is a genuine second life through community builds such as LineageOS, which can resume security patching entirely — an option iPhone owners simply do not have.

Neither route makes an unsupported phone safe for banking.
