Motorola is unusual in explicitly describing its update commitments as estimates rather than binding promises, and its support is steeply tiered. Razr and Edge flagships from 2024 onward receive three Android upgrades and four years of security patches; the mainstream Edge sits lower at roughly two upgrades and three years; and budget moto g phones get the least, often a single OS upgrade with up to three years of patches. The practical consequence is that a cheap moto g bought the same day as a Razr will age out years earlier, so the model matters far more here than the year of purchase.
Strong hardware, short runway
The frustration with Motorola is that the hardware is frequently excellent while the software window is not. The Edge 60 is a good illustration: a genuine triple camera with a real 3x telephoto, IP68 and IP69 ratings and 68W charging, all let down by a three-year patch window ending April 2028. At around $350 that puts it against Samsung A-series phones with six official years. If you value the camera system and expect to replace the phone in three years, it is a fine buy; if longevity is the priority, the comparison is unflattering.
