How long do Tecno phones get updates?
Tecno's HiOS phones are budget-focused and support varies by line. Mainstream Phantom, Camon, Pova, and Spark models typically get two to three Android (HiOS) upgrades and around three years of security patches, while the premium Camon 40 series was promised three upgrades and five years of security. Budget MegaPad and POP lines get up to two years of patches with no guaranteed OS upgrade. These windows are short versus flagship brands, and Tecno isn't sold through official US retail, focusing on Africa, South Asia, and other emerging markets.

What Tecno actually promises
Tecno's commitments are set per product line rather than across the brand, which is the single most important thing to understand before buying one. The premium Camon 40 series carries the longest promise — up to three HiOS version upgrades and up to five years of security patches. Mainstream Camon, Pova and Spark phones sit well below that, typically at two Android upgrades and around three years of patches, and the cheapest Spark models often get a single upgrade. Because Tecno does not publish a per-model support page in the way Samsung and Google do, there is frequently no document you can point to for a specific handset, which is why we record many Tecno windows as estimates derived from the company's observed behaviour rather than as promises.
How quickly Tecno actually delivers updates
A promise is only worth what the delivery record supports, and this is where Tecno is weakest. HiOS is a heavily customised Android skin, and heavy customisation slows platform upgrades — new Android versions have historically reached Tecno phones many months after Google's release, sometimes close to a year. Monthly security patching is also irregular compared with the major brands, with many devices moving to quarterly cadence early in their lives. None of that makes a Tecno phone unsafe to buy; it does mean you should treat the security end date as the number that matters and largely ignore which Android version the phone is running.
How to check your own Tecno phone
Open Settings, then System, then System update to see the current patch level — the date shown there is the month of the last security fix your phone received, and it is the most reliable indicator of whether it is still being maintained. If that date is more than six months old, your phone has in practice stopped receiving patches regardless of what its theoretical window says. Find your exact model in the table below for its recorded end-of-support date, and treat anything within twelve months of that date as a phone to start planning a replacement for.
Is a Tecno phone a sensible long-term buy?
It depends entirely on how long you intend to keep it. Tecno's hardware value is genuinely strong — curved AMOLED panels, wireless charging and high refresh rates appear at prices no major brand matches. What you are trading away is software runway. A three-year patch window means a Tecno bought today is a phone you replace rather than keep, and if you compare it against a Samsung A-series device with six official years, the Samsung is very often the cheaper phone measured per month of safe use, even at a higher sticker price.
